Classroom/Library Connections

  • Resources for teachers and students: Minneapolis libraries provide a wide variety of resources to support student success, from the Homework Helper drop-in tutoring program to web pages with guided access for kids and teens. Resources are available to borrow, use in the library and to access remotely. Contact the librarian and library assigned to your school for more information. If your school is not listed, please call (612) 630-6280 or e-mail us at youthservices@hclib.org.
  • Class visits to the library: We welcome you to bring your class to the library, and we appreciate advance notice. Please contact your most convenient library. If you wish to schedule a visit to the Central Library, here is detailed information about class visits to Central. (Note: To borrow library materials and/or to use Internet computers at the library, a library card is required.)
  • Library cards: Library cards are free! For information on obtaining a library card during a visit, contact your most convenient library. Central Library visits can arrange to issue library cards for classes and youth groups. See also general information on obtaining library cards for individuals. 
  • Deposit collections: We can provide a selection of fine-free books to be checked out to your classroom for 60 days. Please contact your most convenient library to arrange for a deposit collection.

Library Services Supporting Student Success

  • Homework Helper: Trained tutors provide free after-school drop-in tutoring and homework assistance at many Minneapolis Public Library locations.
  • Live Homework Help: Homework assistance available from any computer with Internet access - just log on with your library card!
  • Age-Appropriate Booklists: Reading suggestions for reluctant and avid readers alike are provided at the library and on our website.
  • Web for Kids: Our guided access makes it easier than ever for students to connect to useful, age-appropriate websites and to find and request items from the Minneapolis Public Library collection. Connections can be made at the library or from home or school.
  • Web for Teens: This area of our website provides links to the coolest sites, ideas for books to read, and library events for teens.
