Here are links to federal and state tax forms and instructions, where to file your taxes, a directory of tax assistance sites, resources at the library, and more.
The library can help you get through this tax season. All libraries in Minneapolis offer do-it-yourself tax books for checkout and reproducible tax forms for copying. All libraries have a limited selection of giveaway copies of the most requested federal and state forms and booklets. Ask the staff for more information. Internet access makes it possible to download tax forms, too.
The Internal Revenue Service has a Taxpayer Assistance Center in the skyway at 250 Marquette Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. It is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Here you can pick up current federal tax forms and booklets and receive help with your federal taxes on a walk-in basis. No state tax forms or booklets are made available at the Taxpayer Assistance Center. There are Taxpayer Assistance Centers in St. Paul and Bloomington, also. For more information call 651-312-8082.
To speak with a federal tax assistor about your individual tax questions, call 1-800-829-1040 weekdays from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Recorded federal tax information is available 24/7 at 1-800-829-4477. You can check the status of your federal tax refund at this telephone number, too. Federal tax forms can be requested during business hours at 1-800-829-3676. They also can be ordered via fax 24/7 using 1-703-368-9694. Federal tax forms are available online at www.irs.gov. The IRS Taxpayer Advocate can be reached at 1-877-777-4778 for unresolved issues.
State tax information is available from the Minnesota Department of Revenue at 651-296-3781. Individual help is offered Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tax forms can also be requested at this number. Call 651-296-4444 to check the status of your state tax return. Minnesota tax forms are available online at www.taxes.state.mn.us.
Filing online is an alternative to doing the paperwork. A list of the Internal Revenue Service's e-filing partners is available online at www.irs.gov/efile. Library customers can file their taxes electronically at the library. However, doing so is not advisable for a number of practical reasons. The library does not allow users to install tax preparation software, such as TurboTax, on its computer terminals. Its terminals can't be modified for personal use, nor is the library licensed to add software that belongs to private persons.
