Welcome to Small Business

So you're thinking of starting a business. Congratulations! You have a lot of work ahead of you, research to do, decisions to make, money to raise. MPL's Small Business Center is a great place for sources of information on writing a business plan, choosing your legal business structure, exploring your market, financing your business and much more. This area of the library features a selection of books for use in your research and experienced staff available for guidance.

Use MPL's Small Business Center website to explore the library's extensive collection of books, subscription databases, selected weblinks, tutorials and upcoming events for entrepreneurs.

To get started, try this excellent online guide to business startup basics from the U.S. Small Business Administration. "Startup Basics" deals with everything from determining if you have the motivation and talent to be a business owner to taking you step-by-step through the essentials of the business plan, types of legal entities, financing and marketing your business, dealing with employees, taxes and more. For free one-to-one counseling, come to a SCORE workshop at the library or contact the Minnesota SCORE office to set up an appointment.

The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) requires libraries receiving certain types of federal funding to install software designed to filter visual depictions that are obscene, contain child pornography, or are harmful to minors. Rather than jeopardize potential federal funding, the Minneapolis Public Library Board authorized the installation of filtering software to comply with CIPA. In accordance with the law, persons aged 17 or older may request to have the filters disabled for any lawful purpose that meets Minneapolis Public Library Internet Policies and Guidelines.
