Minneapolis Public Library: Learning Commons: Genealogy

Welcome to Genealogy

Genealogy is the fastest growing hobby in the United States, and the Minneapolis Public Library is a great place to begin your research or to track down that elusive fact you need to complete some of your work.

Browse the Genealogy and Minnesota History collections, learn about our databases or check out a book. We offer a monthly class for beginners and a volunteer genealogist comes regularly to help you out.

The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) requires libraries receiving certain types of federal funding to install software designed to filter visual depictions that are obscene, contain child pornography, or are harmful to minors. Rather than jeopardize potential federal funding, the Minneapolis Public Library Board authorized the installation of filtering software to comply with CIPA. In accordance with the law, persons aged 17 or older may request to have the filters disabled for any lawful purpose that meets Minneapolis Public Library Internet Policies and Guidelines.

Please note: Internet filtering software may fail to block objectionable content and may unintentionally block sites that have legitimate research value. If you believe a particular website should be permanently blocked or unblocked please complete our online form to make a recommendation.
