Northeast Library Architect Selection
Cuningham Group Architecture, P.A. has been selected as the architectural firm for the Northeast Library renovation project. Cuningham Group has extensive experience with library, school, museum, and retail design. They were project architects for the Minneapolis Community and Technical College Library and the Interdistrict Downtown School. Cuningham Group are experts at creating unique interactive learning environments nationwide with a team comprised of dedicated, talented professionals who highly value open communication, community involvement and accountability in their urban design projects.
The Minneapolis Public Library Board of Trustees is strongly committed to the community for quality library services based on MPL’s new Blueprint for Service model in state-of-the-art facilities. Upon completion, the Northeast Library will be fully accessible and technologically up-to-date. It will have ample space for Northeast’s collections and for quiet reading areas, flexible meeting spaces and exciting gathering places for families, children and teens. The library, with new welcoming, entrances and enhanced landscaping that blends with the busy Central Avenue commercial corridor, will be an attractive destination for neighborhood people to gather, meet, and browse in a friendly, inviting space.
Public participation and community involvement are vital aspects of the Northeast Library project. For the last several months library staff have met with Northeast community organizations to inform the community about the upcoming project and to recruit members for the Northeast Library Advisory Team. The Advisory Team will include representatives from neighborhood organizations, schools, business and community organizations as well as area teens, library users and non-users. The Advisory Team will convene in September once the architect contract is finalized.
Northeast Library construction is scheduled for 2008 with project completion and grand reopening set for 2009.
