About the Special Collections Department

The Special Collections Department holds more than 25,000 books plus other materials in ten special collections for reference and research use. The largest of the department's collections is the Minneapolis Collection, which was created by the Library Board in 1940. The collection contains books, directories, maps and atlases, clippings, photographs, periodicals, and archival records related to Minneapolis history, government, businesses, buildings, institutions, arts, and individuals.

In addition to the approximately 10,000 digital images from the Minneapolis Public Library's historical photo collection, an additional 20,000 photos in the Minneapolis Photo Collection have not yet been digitized for the database. These photos are arranged in file drawers by subject. Included are a large collection of portraits as well as photos pertaining to clubs and organizations, hospitals, hotels, social agencies, sports, and lake and park views. For information on these photos contact the Special Collections Department via e-mail specialcollections@mplib.org or telephone (612) 630-6350.
