Buses and Rail

All Metro Transit buses that serve downtown have stops within two or three blocks of Central Library; some of them at our doorstep. For more information, see Metro Transit's route map of downtown.

Minneapolis Central Library is just two blocks from the Hiawatha Light Rail Nicollet Mall station.

Bike Lockers

Your bike's very own mini-garage at the library!

Bike lockers provide safe, enclosed storage for your bike and equipment.

Bike lockers at Minneapolis Central Library are located on Parking Level 1 (P1) and are available for rental on an annual basis. The fee is $60 per year plus a refundable security/key deposit of $25 due in full at time of rental. The rental year begins the first day of the first full month following payment and runs for 12 months.

Bike Racks

Bike racks are available on the 4th and Hennepin and 4th and Nicollet corners of Central Library.

Please be kind to trees -- locking bikes to the trees in front of the Dunn Brothers coffee shop can damage the bark and hurt the trees. Help us keep a friendly, green environment for readers and coffee drinkers.

Be sure to use the automatic ticketing machines on the main floor or either of the parking levels to pay before you return to your car. Machines accept Visa and Mastercard as well as cash.

Driving Directions to Central Library

From the North/Northwest:

• Take I-94 east to the 4th Street (Metrodome) exit and follow 4th to the Library. The library is on your left between Hennepin and Nicollet. Parking entrance is on 4th (across the bus and bike lanes).

From the West:

• Take I-394 east into Downtown to 4th Street North. Proceed on 4th Street to the Library. The library is on your left between Hennepin and Nicollet. Parking entrance is on 4th (across the bus and bike lanes).

From the South:

• Via 35W: Take 35W north, enter downtown on 5th Avenue and continue north to 3rd Street. Turn left at 3rd Street. The library is ahead on your left between Nicollet and Hennepin. To get to the parking entrance, continue to 1st Avenue North and turn left. Turn left again on 4th Street, the very next block. Continue back down fourth--the library is on your left between Hennepin and Nicollet. Parking entrance is right on 4th (across the bus and bike lanes).
• Via Hiawatha: Take Hiawatha Ave. north and enter downtown on 7th Street. Continue on Chicago Avenue to 3rd Street. Turn left at 3rd Street. The library is ahead on your left between Nicollet and Hennepin. To get to the parking entrance, continue to 1st Avenue North and turn left. Turn left again on 4th Street, the very next block. Continue back down fourth--the library is on your left between Hennepin and Nicollet. Parking entrance is on 4th (across the bus and bike lanes).

From the Northeast:

• Via Central Ave. (Hwy. 65) and/or Hennepin: Take Central southbound all the way into Minneapolis. Turn right onto 1st Avenue Northeast. 1st Avenue will flow into Hennepin. Cross the Mississippi River on the Hennepin Ave. bridge. Hennepin traffic will divert onto 1st Avenue North. Take 1st Avenue North to 4th Street. Turn left on 4th Street. The library is on your left between Hennepin and Nicollet. Parking entrance is on 4th (across the bus and bike lanes).
• Via 35W: Travel south on 35W and exit on Washington Avenue. Turn right on Washington and proceed to 3rd Avenue, where you should take a left. Then, take an immediate right on 3rd Street. The library is ahead on your left between Nicollet and Hennepin. To get to the parking entrance, continue to 1st Avenue North and turn left. Turn left again on 4th Street, the very next block. Continue back down fourth--the library is on your left between Hennepin and Nicollet. Parking entrance is on 4th (across the bus and bike lanes).

From the University of Minnesota:

• From the East Bank: Follow SE 4th Street to 1st Avenue Northeast and take a left. 1st Avenue will flow into Hennepin. Cross the Mississippi River on the Hennepin Ave. bridge. Hennepin traffic will divert onto 1st Avenue North. Take 1st Avenue North to 4th Street. Turn left on 4th Street. The library is on your left between Hennepin and Nicollet. Parking entrance is on 4th (across the bus and bike lanes).
• From the West Bank: Take Washington Ave. into Downtown from Seven Corners. Proceed to 3rd Avenue, where you should take a left. Then, take an immediate right on 3rd Street. The library is ahead on your left between Nicollet and Hennepin. To get to the parking entrance, continue to 1st Avenue North and turn left. Turn left again on 4th Street, the very next block. Continue back down fourth--the library is on your left between Hennepin and Nicollet. Parking entrance is on 4th (across the bus and bike lanes).

From St. Paul:

• Travel west on I-94 and take the 5th Street exit into downtown Minneapolis. Follow 5th Street around the Metrodome and turn right on Chicago Avenue. Continue on Chicago Avenue to 3rd Street. Turn left on 3rd Street. The library is ahead on your left between Nicollet and Hennepin. To get to the parking entrance, continue to 1st Avenue North and turn left. Turn left again on 4th Street, the very next block. Continue back down fourth--the library is on your left between Hennepin and Nicollet. Parking entrance is on 4th (across the bus and bike lanes).
